Air Raid: Tactical Update 13

A swirling column of air and water disintegrated in an instant as one of the Revenants exploded. The `Mech’s detonation shook the earth and blasted a meter-deep crater into the tarmac of the Clans’ recently-constructed runway. The berm beneath, hard-packed and elevated to keep the effects of erosion to a minimum, was immediately drenched through. Takashi Meyer was no combat engineer, but his father had been nearly bankrupted by a number of failed roadway projects—he knew how quickly a hard rain could undermine even well-laid ferrocrete.

“I will never get used to how willing the Rim Worlders are to throw away good machines,” Amazon murmured, the crystal-clear laser communications network easily conveying the shaky quaver in her quiet voice. They’d been saved by one of the Republic’s exploding Revenants before—the design was indistinguishable from the normal “guard dogs”—but the fact that the Rim Worlders were able to casually throw away what the rest of the Inner Sphere would’ve considered nearly priceless military assets was unnerving all the same. A smaller explosion drew the Flashman pilot’s attention farther downfield.

“Holy hell,” Takashi murmured. “I didn’t see what happened—did one of the dogs just take down an Assault `Mech by itself?”

“Nah,” Taj’s thick Queensland accent was expressive, even if Takashi—not a native English speaker—found it difficult to parse. “Took the side off the—dunno what that thing is, the one that’s like some madman took the guns out of two AWS-8Rs and welded ‘em to a raspberry. Thing’s still standing though. Still. Good Dog.”
